CNAs are happy to see easier movement in residents after massage sessions. Meal times and group activities are more interactive and fulfilling for the residents. The frequency and severity of sundowning is lessened. The unit as a whole is calmer and more tranquil.

Nurses feel that ambulatory and balance abilities are more stable due to clearer thought processes. The incidence and severity of colds and flu diminish. Residents in general are more engaged, less lethargic. Medication can be reduced.

Families are impressed with the improved atmosphere of the unit and feel more comfortable visiting their loved ones. Family members are happy to see that their loved ones are calmer and more fulfilled.

The occupancy rates in our test units rose from 62% to 86% in the five months after beginning the program. The number of hourly staff was reduced as the atmosphere in the units became calmer and less stressful. Revenues increased with a higher occupancy rate and net operating income increased as staff and resident turnover fell to a minimum.

We will be happy to share several ideas with you. Some operators see the program as a value-added service to be included, and others may wish to price it as an add-on service.

We offer three training packages that range from purchase of the manual only to full setup. The full setup package entails our staff ordering the equipment and supplies, setting up the aromatherapy massage room, training caretakers in both sections of the program and working with the marketing staff on how to promote the program to current and potential residents and their families. In the future we will also offer an option that includes ongoing monitoring and refresher sessions for staff.

Because this program is potentially so valuable, you may wish to hire a licensed massage therapist for the aromatherapy massage section of the program. Each community should check with its state licensing board to determine if any additional licensing is required.
